Smoking and Your Oral Health

 
We all know how bad smoking is for your overall health, but what about your oral health? Smoking has extremely detrimental effects on your mouth and teeth.

Some of the oral complications that can result from tobacco use include:
  • Increased risk of oral cancer
  • Increased the risk of gum disease
  • Gum tissue damage causing receding gums, exposed roots, increased sensitivity and decay
  • Bad breath
  • Stains that cannot be removed by brushing
  • Build up of tartar resulting in more frequently needed dental cleanings
  • Damaged sense of smell and taste
Is it your time to Quit?

Here are some tips that may help. It is going to be tough but with dedication you can do it!
  • Speak to your doctor about quitting. They are a valuable resource and may suggest over the counter or prescription medications for assistance.
  • Do some research. There are countless success stories and advice resources to improve your success rate.
  • Tell the people close to you that you are ready to quit.
  • Set a firm quit day!
  • Make a list of your 'triggers' such as; drinking coffee, after a meal, driving, talking on the phone.
  • Try changing your routine: take a different route to work, drink tea instead of coffee, eat somewhere else.
  • Use a nicotine substitute. Using one may increase your chances of success.
