February 2014: Tips, eNews & More!

Do you have Olympic fever?

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games are finally here. We are all excited to cheer for our Canadian athletes as they go for gold. Go Canada Go!

Are you feeling the chill of the season? We say embrace it! Feb 17th is Family Day and our office will be closed. Take advantage of the cold and get outside! Ski, skate, or just put on some snow pants and play in the snow. The cold isn't going away anytime soon (despite what some groundhogs may say), so why not enjoy it? There are also plenty of fun things to do in the city this Family Day. Be sure to bundle up and layer yourself well, you don't want to catch a cold.

If you do feel yourself getting sick, be sure to drink plenty of warm fluids and orange juice to load up on vitamin C to help your body stay strong. Some other tips to stay healthy this season include:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Throw tissues away after use
  • Get plenty of sleep and good rest
Until next month, stay warm and keep smiling,

Dr. Nick Babatsikos and Team

Are You Ready to Get Close This Valentine's Day?

There you are, it's Valentine's Day and you have the whole day ahead of you. You roll over and look at your better half and decide to give them a good morning kiss. But wait! What's been brewing in your mouth over night?

Here's a question - if we floss and brush before we go to bed and settle down to sleep with a fresh mouth every night, why is it that just mere hours later, we wake up with dreaded "morning breath"?

The simple answer is that during the day, saliva works as your body's own natural mouthwash, washing away bacteria and particles that cause bad breath. While we sleep, saliva production decreases and our mouths dry out, providing the perfect environment for odour-causing bacteria.

Bad breath (or "halitosis", as it's officially known) can come from a number of different sources, such as a dry mouth, decomposition of food particles in and around your teeth, and foods (such as garlic and cabbage) that contain certain sulphur compounds. Halitosis can also reflect medical conditions, such as chronic infections in the lungs to kidney and liver failure. Dieting and fasting can slow down the stimulation of saliva flow and result in "offensive" breath. Talking for long periods of time will dry out your mouth with the same result.

No surprise, the Bank of Canada held the Benchmark Interest Rate at 1 per cent. With our economy hitting some bumps, there was even minor speculation that the Bank might lower the rate.

Over the past few weeks, gloomy economic news has impacted the Canadian dollar. While a visit to the sunny south will cost more, the loonie's drop is a needed boost for Canadian manufacturers. As a result, the bank has increased its projections for exports in 2014 and 2015, along with its estimates for GDP growth - a silver lining in stormy clouds.

It looks like interest rate stability will continue for some time to come.
