According to the almanac, the summer solstice begins on June 21st, but Canadians know summer really kicks off with the Victoria Day long weekend!

Warm weather means more opportunities for outdoor activities, but don't forget to stay safe when spending time outside. The Canada Safety Council educates the public about potential health concerns during Summer Safety Week (May 1-7).

Take a look at some of their tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe in the heat.

Reminder:

Mother's Day is on Sunday, May 10th and Monday, May 18th is Victoria Day. Both are great opportunities to get together with family and friends to enjoy the nice weather.

Our office will be closed for Victoria Day!

Wishing you countless reasons to smile,

Preventing Periodontal Disease

We are told from an early age that daily brushing and flossing is important, but why? Having a daily regimen helps combat oral health issues like periodontal disease. Infrequent oral hygiene and improper brushing can exacerbate these issues, making it easy for gum infection to occur.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Due to poor oral hygiene, it becomes easier for bacterial infection to subsist in your mouth. Periodontal disease is caused by the same strain of bacterial infection commonly associated with plaque. Once there is plaque on your teeth or gums, it can potentially harden into tartar, further contributing to tooth decay by attacking below the gum line. Since the bacteria weakens gum tissue, it separates your teeth from your gums, leaving pockets or open spaces that make more room for bacteria and plaque to damage the tooth structure. When left untreated, periodontal disease can cause bone loss, loose teeth, and gradually, tooth loss.

Causes of Periodontal Disease
  • Lack of daily brushing and flossing
  • Incorrect brushing technique
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Poorly-controlled genetics
  • Lack of routine checkups or professional cleanings

Healthy Poutine!

Okay, okay, maybe not healthy poutine, but much healthier poutine! Originating in Quebec, poutine is made of French fries, cheese curds, and gravy. A few alterations of the main ingredients can improve the nutritional value in poutine without altering its delicious taste.

The nice thing about this recipe is its flexibility. Use your favourite potatoes or, instead of using cheese curds, substitute with partly skimmed mozzarella cheese or even fat-free cottage cheese.
